Back-to-school fashion may have been addressed back in August, and by now you may have already debuted some new wardrobe items for the academic year ahead. But with the fall season now settling in, it’s still a good time to throw in a few updates accordingly, and one area in which this can be especially fun is the handbag arena. Always some of the most interesting accessories when cool weather sets in, stylish handbags are must-haves for fashionable ladies attending school (or anywhere, really). Fortunately, this season’s trends are maximizing utility and practicality. That is to say, you won’t see a lot of 10-square-inch clutches out there in the coming months, but rather some bags that are actually useful in addition to being chic.
A few of the popular designs making the rounds in designer collections can really catch the eye, and they’re irresistibly handy.
Fringe Backpacks
For me, there’s always a sigh of relief when something so convenient and easy as a backpack comes up in high-end fashion trends. There’s just no more practical means of lugging your stuff around (particularly if it’s school-related), and when you look past the basic kids’ backpack brands from some real designers, there are just a lot of great styles out there. A Hollywood Life look at this fall’s backpacks took on these bags from a celebrity perspective, but also with an eye toward fashion. They noted that fringe, in particular, is standing out. A nice, smallish leather backpack with some fringes and tassels is as “in” as it gets this season, and it’ll look great with most anything.
Bucket Bags
If an ordinary backpack isn’t for you and you still prefer something you can hold purse-style in one hand, the bucket bag is extraordinarily trendy this season. It makes for another option that’s as convenient as it is chic. Lyst’s assortment of fall bags focuses pretty heavily on this style even within its backpack section, noting examples from Mango, Deux Lux, and Hairston Heritage, among others. These are great choices if you want the bulk and capability of a backpack but prefer not to actually wear one in the conventional manner.
Furry Exteriors
This is less of an overarching style trend and more an embellishment that can go with any style of handbag, but it’s nevertheless something we’re seeing a lot of this season, as well as something that’s irresistibly fun. Popsugar counted “fluffy” among its top seven bag trends for the fall of 2015. Some of the examples therein were for smaller bags (clutches and the like), but there are plenty of bigger bags—like the aforementioned backpacks and bucket bags—demonstrating this look. If you’re looking for just the right touch to help your bag stand out, this is certainly one idea to consider!
Those are some of the hottest looks in ladies’ bags that are closing out 2015. So whether you’re doing a little late back-to-school shopping, or merely keeping up with the seasons, keep them in mind the next time you’re out—and seeking a new bag.
