One of my favorite movies is “The Painted Veil.” Although I love the original version starring Greta Garbo from 1934, I prefer the 1996 version with Naomi Watts and Edward Norton. The cinematography is amazing and the costumes are stunning. If you haven’t seen either film, you must. Greta’s performance in the original film didn’t get wonderful reviews, and the 2006 was probably better described as a sleeper film, but the story line is great.
Both films are based on W. Somerset Maugham’s 1925 novel of the same name. The film shows the relationship between a husband and wife who are having marital difficulties in the middle of a cholera epidemic. I don’t want to spoil it, but there is much more to the story.
Here are some of my favorite pics of the 1996 version of the film with Naomi Watts and Edward Norton as husband and wife. Enjoy!

I loved Norton in this role. He was amazing. And Watts had this exquisite, understated poise. She was really strong in a quiet way. I loved the film.

Oooohhh, I entirely forgot about this movie. It’s on my (huge) can’t wait to see list, but reading this delightful post bumps it up (I adore Edward Norton!) near the top.
Big hugs, sweet dear!

I haven’t seen the original, but I love the 2006 version!! I won the DVD in a contest and after that I read the novel and started watching more movies starring Edward Norton. He’s a great actor.
