I’ve been reading a lot lately about the relationship between Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe. Joe was deeply in love with Marilyn, we know. He was protective of her and felt she involved herself with people who were detrimental to her life and career. Marilyn loved Joe, but did she ever really love him?
After their divorce, Joe asked Marilyn to remarry him. Upon her death, he continued to have half a dozen roses delivered to her crypt three times a week. Upon Joe’s death, he made his son agree to continue sending the roses for him. I do believe Marilyn was the love of Joe’s life, but what do you think she felt about him? What is your take on this marriage? Here are some photos of them together. Have a great day friends!
Joe provided Marilyn with a solid “rock” figure that she could count on, she probably loved him but was not in love with him. She needed the constant validation that lead her to other men.
Just found your blog! 🙂 I think any relationship Marilyn had was doomed from the beginning. It’s sad.
I honestly don’t know that much about their relationship but I’ve been reading the comments and learning more. I never realized how sad her story is!

I’m of the opinion that Joe was the love of Marilyn’s life, and they just weren’t able to make home hearth and love mesh together.
Ohh I teared up when I read that Joe made his son still bring flowers. What a shame. Now that’s love. He definitely loved her.
I don’t know, but what a sad story.
Oh how nice-thanks for posting these!-from what I could tell they look very much in love. I read a biography on her some time ago, and according to the author she was planning on remarrying him and did consider him the love of her life as well.
Hi Kori, you are welcome sweet gal! Please just email me your address details and I will have it posted out to you ([email protected]) – cheers and hugz!
I definitely don’t think he was the love of her life, I think Arthur Miller was. But she for sure was the love of his life!
It’s too bad their marriage didn’t last, I liked them as a couple.
Just spent some time catching up on your blog and I really love your posts!
I think the intensity of his love saddened her because she never felt the same passion for him…or for anyone at all, possibly. Combined with the differences in their personalities, the difference in the lifestyles they craved, the physical abuse, the miscarriages…well, I think it was just too much.
Hi Beautiful! I hope you had a great NYE! Everytime I visit your blog I’m amazed that you keep finding more pics of Marilyn!! go girl!
After reading the script for a biopic about Jean Harlow, she made him promise that if anything bad were to happen to her that he would send roses to her grave once a week for 20 years. And he agreed.
They look lovely together, but I think he may have loved her more. It seemed like she was always searching for something else or more, whatever that may have been.
I love the first photo you posted of the couple. Look at their body language. She is the one leaning into him! That photo is very sensual in many ways. Perhaps, in their private life, she was more needy of him than he of her.
Hi Blondie – I think you should come over to my blog – there is a bit of a surprise on there for you 😀
I never knew that about the flowers! He really, really loved her but was very jealous of the attention she got and how sexual she was (even though it probably wasn’t intended, she exuded sensuality) but at that point i think she was starting to fall apart. Such a shame as i thought they made a lovely couple. xx
I have to admit that I know nothing about their relationship so I can’t answer your question…but, how sweet that about the flowers!
I don’t think she really loved Joe. She probably loved the idea of dating a star like him. Arthur was always her true love. Ah, the complexities of love…x
Hi Kori,
I’m Marily obsessed myself. I’m really enjoying reading all the tid bits you’ve found. Inquiring minds you know…..
Also, thanks for the comment and I certainly will continue to follow you. Hope you follow me too! Lovely day to you, dear!
Happy New Year to you dear sweet one! Hope your holidays were fabulous! I’m finally back in the blog world and catching up…and what a great post to begin with! Love Marilyn and want to believe with all my heart that she truly loved Joe!
Joe loved her with an obsessive, controlling passion..I read that he used to slap her around pretty bad! and that after he beat her up after she did the 7 Year Itch infamous dress scene, Marilyn had had enough, and she wanted out..and rightfully so! So do I think she loved him as much as he did? I’d say she did, but was quickly disillusioned with him, and fell out of love with him because of his controlling behavior. She realized that he could never come to terms with her stature as a star.
Ah! I am so happy you posted this, I have one lonely book on Marilyn and it’s mostly pictures but I actually sat down last night and read some about her life. It definitely hinted that he disapproved of the play on her sensuality in the media. Also, it said she struggled through several miscarriages. I wonder if any were with him and if her desperate desire for children left her a little empty on the inside. That is a natural need for every woman that can’t be forgotten. I think they’re relationship looked great in pictures and on paper but behind closed doors it was probably a lot of pain and heart ache. Can you imagine if she had had a daughter? She would be one famous kid, well woman now!
He loved her more! In most of the pics, she is looking somewhere and he is looking at her in one. She was searching too hard for that elusive something to see it in front of her, ever.
Well Kori, I think Marilyn’s love for people was very complicated given her situation. I think it would be terribly hard to be famous, and try to maintain a relationship. Look how hard it is for “normal” people. She tried though I guess!
Take care,
Martha
p.s. have you ever been to where Marilyn is buried?
i dont think she loved him as much as he did. very nice of him to keep the tradition though passed on (:

She is so beautiful. What a sweet gesture he displayed with the flowers. Have I told you my love for Marilyn? I have several pictures of her in my house 🙂 Thought you would appreciate that!
What a wonderful post, there relationship was definitely intriguing.
Thanks for posting 🙂
xo.
I’ve read almost every book ever published about Marilyn – I know everything about her.
My take on their marriage? She loved him, but he was controlling and overbearing. Sometimes relationships work better between people when they aren’t married. Marilyn and Joe continued to have a close friendship after their divorce, but I think their personalities just weren’t compatible enough for a successful marriage. Joe wanted a traditional wife, and as much as Marilyn may have wanted to be one, she couldn’t.
Marilyn was a very intellectual woman. If you look at the vast majority of the men she was involved with, married & admired they were very smart.
I think she loved Joe but not enough to fill her needs. By that I mean she craved the need of approval. Joe was blindly jealous of her & the Hollywood set & the Kennedy’s. He was right… they did destroy her but she must have been like hanging onto a wild horse. He wanted a wife…. She wanted fame…..JMO!!
((Yep, I read a lot about MM & her life.))
Love,
Marilyn
xxoo
p.s. In case you were wondering…. Yes, I was an early 50’s baby & named after Marilyn….
Hey girl,
I’m really trying to get on here more. Since most of my studio is packed up, I wasn’t creating anything and so I stopped blogging altogether. But I started to go crazy, so I’m back creating again and back blogging! I like it this way!
Yea, Joe really loved her. She is such a mystery to me. I always wonder if she had lived, would she have reunited with Joe.
I think that by the time she and Joe were married, poor Marilyn was completely lost and didn’t even know who SHE was anymore; I believe she had lost the capacity to trust anyone, and trust is actually a very important component of love. What a tragedy.
What great photos, I don’t know enough about their relationship but now I’m curious!
She is so beautiful… I love this.
I did my first blog about movies today. Some of them are vintage… you inspired me!
