I’ve always been interested in the whole concept of Roller Derby. I never really understood the attraction of watching girls knock each other over railings on skates, but do like the outfits, and the tough girl concept behind it. I did a little research and this is what I found out:
Roller Derbies were started in the 1880’s and 90’s as a type of race on skates for women. They then became popular again in 1935 during the Great Depression, where there were teams of two-three people. In the 1970’s, the sport got really popular and started becoming more of an entertainment “show,” similar to wrestling. The girls present an image of tough, athletic, and pretty girls on skates.
So what do you think? Any interest in watching a derby? Have you been before? Do you skate? I love it and wish I could go to the rink every week. Hope you have a great Sunday friends.

I’ve never been, but I’d like to see one, I think! I’d be really good at it… I love skating and love the outfits… And I think I might have a bit of rage to take out on some ill-expecting skater!

I’d be down with a current, modern day roller derby! And “with” the outfits! Oh, that would be sooo much fun! I haven’t skated in years – last time it was with roller blades (still have them) however, I love my old skates. I would skate outside for hours and hours. So much fun.

My parents met at a roller skating rink. Thank goodness for that.
I remember going roller skating as a kid, not that I was real good at it, but I tried. And my son enjoyed skating as a kid growing up.
I also remember watching the roller skating teams play. We used to follow the Philadelphia Warriors back in the 70’s.

I’ve sort of always wanted to go to a show.. errr race? It looks sort of interesting.. and it would be a great excuse to get my mean game face on and cheer for something. I mean, why not?

Roller derby is kind of a big thing in Seattle (Rat City Rollergirls). I haven’t seen them though. I’d rather just roller skate! You should check out the movie Whip It.

I’m so old I would probably break a hip but I agree with Fancy Lady – wearing something pretty/cool and smashing bitches to music? Sounds good to me! Is there chocolate involved?

I love roller skating. It makes me feel like a kid again. I would love to see a derby just to say that I have seen one!

I would totally do this. They actually have a league out here in Montana. I have watched a few times and the girls that do it are pretty hard core and could probably smush me. I’m sure it would be fun though. Anything would be awesome in leopard print skates!

I have always wanted to put on some skates and hit people. I feel that way when I drive in Houston traffic. I love the look of old skates…takes me back to the day of couples skates and hidden kisses behind the skate center lockers!
