Today one of the great writers of our time has passed at the age of 89. Harper Lee, known for her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird (my second favorite novel of all time) passed in Monroeville, AL. If you’ve never read the text, or simply “got through it” in high school, do yourself a favor and read it again. It’s full of rich characters, and definitely teaches wonderful lessons about the human condition and how to love others. The film based on the novel is also wonderful, and stars Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch.
Elle Magazine shares some of their favorite Harper Lee quotes, and I thought it would be a nice tribute to one of my favorite authors to share them with you. If you want to see some fun trivia on the film version, check out my previous post here.
Quotes by Harper Lee:
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”
“Before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.”
“People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for.”
“Atticus, he was real nice.” “Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them.”
“People in their right minds never take pride in their talents.”
“Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It’s knowing you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.”
“It’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn’t hurt you.”
“We’re paying the highest tribute we can pay a man. We trust him to do right. It’s that simple.”
“There are just some kind of men who—who’re so busy worrying about the next world they’ve never learned to live in this one, and you can look down the street and see the results.”
