I was absolutely in awe last week, when Anna of Fash Boulevard featured Brittany Fuson. I’m always looking for great illustrators and artists, and Brittany’s work is adorable and so much fun. I love the eyelashes she does on her illustrations. I thought it would be fun to interview her to give you some insight into who she is and what she does. Here’s what she had to say:
Me: —How old were you when you knew you wanted to pursue art as a career? What made you want to do that?
Brittany: I have always been the one drawing on church bulletins, in the margins of my notebooks during class, etc. I have been drawing since I can remember. I always thought I wanted to be a makeup artist, though. It wasn’t until late high school when I decided to go to the University of Alabama to major in fashion design that I changed my mind and decided I wanted to make clothes for a living. I loved every minute of college & my major, but I quickly discovered that I hated to sew. I found my niche in my fashion illustration class, and decided that I wanted to develop my own stationery line using my illustrations. I haven’t looked back since!
Me: —Who is your favorite artist and why?
Brittany: In all my art classes in high school, I always loved studying Degas. I love his paintings of ballerinas…he’s always been my favorite.
Me: —Where do you draw inspiration from in your current sketches?
Brittany: I’m always surfing the Internet, looking in magazines, books, etc. You really can find inspiration anywhere. I don’t just look at fashion magazines, websites, and books. I find tons of inspiring photos on interior design blogs, too.
Me: —Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What dreams do you have for your art and your company?
Brittany: I have no idea where I’ll be in 10 years, or even tomorrow. I am a big time planner, but I am trying to only plan in the short term. As far as dreams and goals, I would love to develop and produce other items with my artwork on them, and of course, I would love for my company to become international!
Me: —You do custom orders. What was the custom order you enjoyed doing the most? Why?
Brittany: Custom artwork is always interesting but it’s always a challenge. Some clients know exactly what they want, and some give you a very general idea. It’s up to me to make their dreams and ideas come to life, and it’s easier said than done. I don’t really have a favorite, but I do enjoy the experience. It’s like getting to know someone through their pictures and emails. I don’t meet most of the clients I do custom orders for, but I feel like I know them by the end of the process. I am currently working on several projects that I am excited to share in the near future.
Me: —I teach high school. For any students interested in a career in art, what tips or suggestions would you give them?
Brittany: I would encourage them to find what they love to pain, draw, or study. In high school, the assignments can be very specific at times, but I always found a way to make it about something related to fashion. I knew early on that I would be doing something in the way of fashion, but it took some time for me to figure out what it was. When I look back on the work I did in high school, the fashion-theme is very obvious…it is what I found the most joy in, what I still find joy in doing. When you do what you love for a living (or have the opportunity to do what you love), then it doesn’t feel like work. That is what I wish everyone could have the chance to do, to pursue a career in what they love.
Thank you so much to Brittany of Brittany Fuson Paper. If you want to shop for any of her amazing designs, or design your own, check out her website, and tell her I sent you!
